What is blue light?
Blue light, also known as high-energy visible (HEV) light, is a color in the visible light spectrum that the human eye can perceive. These wavelengths of visible and invisible light are measured in nanometers (nm), and generally, the shorter the wavelength, the greater the energy. Blue light has a short wavelength, meaning it produces higher amounts of energy.
Unlike other forms of light, the eyes cannot effectively filter blue light, so a greater amount can pass through the eye and reach the retina. Blue light has both benefits and problems for our eyes and our overall health.
ARTIFICIAL VS NATURAL?
High-energy blue light sources
We are exposed to blue light almost constantly. The main source of blue light is sunlight, but it is also emitted by laptops and monitors, smartphones, tablets, televisions, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and compact fluorescent lamps.
Our exposure to blue light from digital devices is a particular concern due to the proximity of the screens, the amount of time we use our devices, and the cumulative impact of using them every day.
What are the benefits of blue light?
- It promotes alertness.
- It enhances memory and cognitive function.
- It improves mood.
- It regulates the circadian rhythm.
What are the risks?
Screen time has been increasing for the past 20 years and now exceeds 13 hours per day. According to the Sight Council, many people experience eye strain and vision problems when using digital devices for extended periods.
Up to 65% of Americans report experiencing symptoms of digital eye strain, which can include symptoms of:
- Eyestrain
- Blurred vision
- Dry and irritated eyes
- Headaches
- Impact on our circadian rhythms
- Sleeping problems
- Waking up during the night
- Alert status reduced the following day
Concerns about blue light
- Sleep disturbance (79%)
- Tired/sore eyes (77%)
- Dry eyes (70%)
- Headaches (56%)
- Reduced productivity (46%)
- Reduced concentration (43%)
Frequently Asked Questions
for lamps and light bulbs
SPV LED lamps have transformed conventional LED lighting to make it safe and healthy for us. Our goal has been to offer our customers biocompatible light so they can continue to live at night while minimizing the impact on our health.
• We have incorporated an advanced driver to completely eliminate light flicker. Standard LED lamps produce flicker, often exceeding 20,000 Hz (flickering more than 20,000 times per second), generating ultrasound and causing headaches, migraines, and eyestrain.
• EMF (electromagnetic fields) levels have been minimized to avoid exposure to unnatural waves. Our lamps and bulbs do not generate any harmonics (dirty electricity), a type of electromagnetic pollution that is increasingly being studied for its potential biological effects.
• Our SUNSET amber light lamps guarantee blockage of all blue light wavelengths up to 500 nm, and our TWILIGHT red light lamps block all blue and green light wavelengths up to 570 nm, ensuring maximum protection of your circadian rhythms (biological clock).
Most lighting manufacturers have introduced lamps with lower blue light output, referred to as "warm white." However, these lamps still emit high levels of blue light, flicker, and electromagnetic fields.
To date, we are proud to be the only ones able to meet all specifications in a single product.
Conventional LED lamps/bulbs are bad for us, yes, but not all SPV lighting products are the same as conventional LED lighting.
The common LED lighting found in most homes is bad for our health for two main reasons. It has a very high peak in the blue light range and very low peaks in the yellow, orange, and red colors. This high intensity of blue light sends erroneous information to our body, preventing our night cycle from properly activating, generating hormonal disruption (melatonin, cortisol, growth hormone, among others) and generating a chronic low-grade inflammatory environment. Aside from the eye damage caused by unnatural blue light, the possible effects it could have on skin blemishes and cancer have been studied in recent years. Keep in mind that the blue wavelength is located just after UV rays, so its intensity is very high. Since the standard LED light spectrum lacks red and IR (infrared) wavelengths, as we do with natural light, we are faced with highly inflammatory light waves without the other end of the spectrum, which is very anti-inflammatory.
Secondly, conventional LEDs produce flickering effects that, while not visible to the human eye, turn on and off hundreds of times per second. The brain can recognize these flickering effects even if you can't, which can cause eye strain, headaches, loss of concentration, and even eye damage.
All SPV lighting products have been extensively researched, designed, and manufactured to eliminate these harmful aspects of LED lighting. All our lights are blue light-free, greatly reduced in EMF and flicker, providing a soft, consistent light that's better for your health.
Smart light bulbs change color via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, which increases your exposure to high-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs). They can also emit very high levels of flickering and dirty electricity.
We developed Sunset lamps and bulbs to be a general-purpose solution that can be used throughout the home to replace most light fixtures, providing sufficient brightness while eliminating 100% of harmful blue light. This is a good alternative to replacing most of the light fixtures in your home, emitting a pleasant and relaxing warm amber light that is very inviting.
Twilight lamps and bulbs generate a slightly dimmer light that not only eliminates all blue light but also all green light. They are ideal for use in reading lamps, bedrooms and bathrooms, or anywhere you relax in the evening in the last few hours before bed, as they still provide enough light to read and see. They emit a deep orange to red glow. They are the ultimate in lamps to ensure the best possible sleep.
Yes, of course. We've designed the SUNSET range to be widely used in all areas of the home. They provide sufficient light for living rooms and bedrooms, emitting a soft, warm, and relaxing glow, making them suitable for reading lamps and children's rooms.
However, we recommend using red TWILIGHT lights in the rooms where we spend our last moments before bed. However, if for some reason you prefer to use amber SUNSET lights, you can rest assured that this option will be much healthier than the standard white light (even if it's warm) found on the market.
Ideally, you should turn off the lights and keep the room as dark as possible while you sleep. However, if you don't feel comfortable sleeping with the lights off, we recommend using our red TWILIGHT nightlights, which have been designed to provide very low power and just enough dim light to eliminate darkness from the room.
Our bulbs are not suitable for use with dimmer switches or for dimming. This is by design, because dimming not only significantly increases the amount of light flicker, but also creates high levels of EMF. We have designed our bulbs to be flicker-free and low EMF, which is why we decided not to dim them.
